What is the Yield in sports betting?
Although this data must be accompanied by many others, the yield is one of the most important points when choosing a Tipster for our investment. In this article we will explain what it is and how to calculate it.
What is the yield?
The yield is the profitability of a tipster's bets, that is, the percentage of profit on the amount wagered. The higher the yield, the higher profitability a long-term service will offer if this ratio is maintained.
It could also be defined as “the net profit that is obtained by betting a certain amount of money”. A Tipster that gives you a profit of 1000€, after adding up to all the bets of 100,000€, is not the same as a Tipster that gives you the same amount of profit with 15,000€ bet. Although the example may seem very different from reality, it is relatively easy to bet over 100,000€ in a year.
The best Tipster, in general terms, is the one that offers you the biggest profits with the least risk, that is, the one with the best Yield.
How is the yield calculated?
To calculate the yield of a Tipster, the following formula is used:
Yield = [(Net profit) / (staked)] x 100
The net profit indicates the net profit that we have obtained. For example, if we bet 20€ on a 2 odd, we get 40€ but the net profit is 20€.
The staked is the sum of the amounts of all bets placed. For example, if we bet 20€, then 30€ and later 50€, we will have bet a total of 100€.
To give a practical example, suppose we make the following bets:
• 20€ to Real Madrid @2
• 30€ to Norway Women @1.7
• 50€ to Spain U20 @1.8
Case 1: We hit all 3 bets.
We won 20€ with the Real Madrid bet, 21€ with Norway Women and 40€ with Spain U20. The net profit is 81€.
The total staked is the sum of all the amounts (20 + 30 + 50) = 100€
[(Net profit) / (stake)] x 100 = [(81) / (100)] * 100 = 81% of Yield
Or what is the same, we have bet a total of 100€ for a profit of 81€.
Case 2: We fail all 3 bets.
We lose all 3 bets, therefore our profit is -100€.
The total staked is the sum of all the amounts (20 + 30 + 50) = 100€
[(Net profit) / (stake)] x 100 = [(-100) / (100)] * 100 = -100% of Yield
In other words, we have bet a total of 100€ and have lost it.
A Tipster with -100% yield assumes that they have not won any bets on their service.
Case 3: We fail the first bet and we hit the next two.
We lose 20€ with the Real Madrid bet, we win 21€ with Norway Women and we win 40€ with Spain U20. The net profit is 41€.
The total staked is the sum of all the amounts (20 + 30 + 50) = 100
[(Net profit) / (stake)] x 100 = [(41) / (100)] * 100 = 41% of Yield
In other words, we have bet a total of 100€ for a profit of 41€.
Data to take into account:
Although the yield is very important when choosing a service, many other factors must be taken into account, such as, for example, whether the yield has been achieved with a small number of bets. If I make a single bet at odds 2 and I hit it, my yield will be 100%, but nothing is further from the truth, this is a misleading result, since we would be looking at the short term.
